Super Superhero

 Hey Bloggers,

This week we have had swimming in the afternoons, so we had some easy AKO work to do when we got back. One of the tasks was to create your own superhero, you had to include their origin story and how they use their powers for good.

What would your Superheros name be? What would their powers be?

Packaging Present

Hey Bloggers,

This week in maths we have been looking at nets, and on Tuesday we got given chocolate to make packaging for, we had to make a net first then put it together. My first mistake was that I didn't put any flaps on my net so I couldn't make the shape I wanted, however, I adapted and changed it into another shape.

Here is what my net looks like, as you will notice I have no flaps. Do you like my final outcome? Do you thing I could change anything?

Precious Parachute (Kind of)

 Hey Bloggers,

For our Inquiry this term we are looking into rockets and space, eventually, we will be making our own rockets, But what goes up must come down right? Our task was to make a parachute, combined with air our rocket should be safe, but we must test it first.

So for the past two Inquiry sessions, Thursday and Monday, we have been making parachutes. Our task was to have the slowest time, with two hex nuts tied to it at the bottom. I was in a group with Pippa and Sophie, our first parachute used fabric and string, it was too fast so we had to come up with another plan, for our second parachute we used thick paper and string.

Here is the photo of the actual parachute:

Here is the picture of the diagram, the bigger one is the final design and the smaller one was our original idea.

Maths Terms

Hey Bloggers,
For Maths this week we have been learning what terms are, terms are when you have one number to start and then you have a rule that tells you to count up in a number. Watch my video to help explain it more.

Can you figure out what term 12, 15 and 20 would be? What if you started with 12 and took away 8, how many blocks would there be?

Welcome Back For Term 3!

I think I am most excited for our Inquiry this term though because we are going to be learning how to build rockets! We are having a team of Ambassadors teach us about space rockets and things we need to know when building our own ones.

I also have a big sporting term ahead including Basketball next Monday and Winter Sport next Friday.

How busy is your term? Did enjoy your break? What did you do throughout the holidays? I hope you enjoy your term coming up!

The Southern Lights

Hey Bloggers,
Today we are making art with the southern lights. The Southern Lights ( also known as Aurora Australis ) is created by the sun and makes solar winds that travel at 750 kilometres per second, they the travel towards the earth and some of the wind breaks through the magnetic pole fields. This makes the oxygen collide with the solar wind to create The Southern Lights!

Have you ever made art to do with The Southern Lights?

Awesome ASCII

Hey Bloggers,
Today we learnt about Binary and ASCII.
Binary is a number system that uses 1’s and 0’s to represent all of our normal set of numbers.  You can use the place values as multiples of 2 to work out how to do it for yourself!  Try watching this video to give it a go yourself!
ASCII is a set of encoded symbols that a computer uses to turn Binary into letters and other symbols from the English language (like what is on our keyboard).  I turned my initials into binary numbers, and then turned those binary numbers into an ASCII code!  Using colours to represent the 1’s and 0’s, my initials in ASCII can be represented by the pattern you see in my image below!

What do you think? Have you ever tried encoding anything in binary or ASCII? Could you have a try for yourself? Can you work out how to write my initials in ASCII from the pattern above?

Mash-up

Hey Bloggers,
This week is our first week back at school, for literacy we have stuck to doing the same work as we were doing in lockdown. for numeracy, we have been using Isometric paper to draw 3D shapes. Here are some of my maths from this week

And here is some of my lockdown literacy work, I did a review on part of the book we are reading called The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.

I think that how Douglas Adams wrote this part of the story was as though he was the whale, it made me feel sad for the whale, but also it helped me understand the story better. I think the whale choose some interesting questions but the questions fit the type of story it is. I loved how he named the wind and ground just before he died meaning no one will know what he said.

I don’t think that Douglas left anything out however, he possibly could have added a little bit more about the plants. The portrayal of the whale was as accurate as a whale if it was in that situation, so I think that it was a pretty accurate but who knows because no one has been in that situation before.

Have you ever read this book? If so do you think that my review was accurate?

Covid-19 update

Hey Bloggers,
Can you believe that we are finally back at school? I feels great! I was so excited to come back to school and see my friends and teachers. This week we have been making stuff to put in a time capsule that will be opened in 40 years. We all wrote a letter and filled out a form that will go into the time capsule. What have you been doing on your first week back at school? Here is the letter for the time capsule.

21st May 2020

Dear Future generation

My name is Zara, I am 11 years old,

I like art and I have 0 siblings, 1 dog and my Mum and Dad as my family,

On 25th March 2020, New Zealand went into lockdown because there was a virus that was spreading across the globe. People were dying and we wanted to flatten the curve. Our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern led the country to make it safe for everyone, It is now May the 18th and we have just emerged from lockdown, today is our first day back at school for 8 long weeks.

During lockdown I spent more time with my family than I normally would, I did lots of arts and crafts, whenever I went out in public I would have to stay 2 or more metres away from someone else that is not in my bubble. Your bubble is the family that you live in your house with. The only thing that was open was the supermarket, doctors and pharmacies, I could only go for walks and that was it. For some reason, everyone was hoarding toilet paper, flour, sugar and bottled water.

But there is one good side to all of this. World pollution and global warming have gone down, waterways have been clearer and some people in Venice have been able to see jellyfish in their waterways, that never happens. What is world pollution like now? I hope that in the future (now for you) that world pollution is as good as it is these days because then climate change will slow down and Venice and other countries will not sink.

What is the world like now? Have there been any other world pandemics? If so what was it like for you? Do you still use planes and cars? I hope that you don’t have to go through anything we did because it was horrible.

Kind regards,

Zara

What do you think about the global impact has been good? Do you think we should keep it up?

Verbal Irony (Sarcasm)

Hey Bloggers,
Today we looked at different types of Irony, there are 3 types of Irony I choose Verbal irony. Verbal Irony is when you say something you don't mean (sarcasm) Have you ever seen or heard Verbal Irony?
Anyway here is my piece - “What happens if your Mum decides that she wants to keep the twins?”

“She raised 4 kids, 2 were twins I don’t think she will want to raise any other kids.”

“What happens if she leaves the twins all on their own?”

“Oh no, you’re right she is going to leave them to head down to the pub at the edge of the road to have a few. Wait she’ll take the twins with her and give them some as well.”

“Arrrrrrgggg” *runs back to the house*

The day I couldn't get hold of...

Hey Bloggers,
Today I have been going back into the past to find a day I couldn't quite get a grip on. Have you ever not been able to get a grip on a day? What day was it and what did you do?
Here is mine -
I open my eyes to see my mother standing over me, shaking the bed, I walk straight past her and walk to the bathroom. I stare at the mirror for a while hoping that I get some memories to find out what day it is, Nothing. My mother walks in and starts fussing over my hair, well that’s normal.
I have left my strange family at home as I set out to school, I enter the gates, looking for something out of the ordinary. My friends run towards me, grab my arms and drag me off to the school building. The classroom seems normal apart from the fact the teachers are dressed more formally maybe I missed dress-up day? No not possible with my mum around.
The day passes by and seems to be ordinary, until just before lunch time. The teachers call for us to line up in our homegroups, we walk in silence to the hall. There are big lights, cameras and all of the chairs are lined up on the stage, it all comes rushing back to me now today is... SCHOOL PHOTOS DAY!

Last day on earth

Hey Bloggers,
Can you imagine that the world is about to end and you are the only one that knows about it, what do you do? Well here is what I would do.

I would wake up and go to the Maccas for breakfast, I wouldn’t tell anyone the world was gonna end because I just want everyone to act normal not go stir crazy because the world is gonna end. I would get an egg McMuffin with 2 hash browns and exactly 32 fries from Maccas!
Next, I would round up all of my family members (not my cousins) and friends and have a huge party with popcorn, lollies and other snacks. We would watch stuff on Netflix and put all of the disco lights on and watch all the adults do cringe dance moves!
Finally, I would visit all the restaurants in Christchurch and eat something from all of them. I would especially be looking forward to all the Indian restaurants and dumplings, I would probably be full after that so I will go to sleep for two reasons 1, help me not feel sick 2, so I don’t have to be awake when the world ends.
That is my last day on earth

Mad Scientist

Hey Bloggers,
Today we made character descriptions based on a mad scientist we have read about in a science fiction book. Do you like science fiction? Anyway here is my description -

Brain (what do they think)- She wants to create a country where everything is free.
Eyes( what she sees in the world) - She sees the world as grey and wants more colour.
Mouth (Quote from the scientist) - “If it’s not for your family then who is it for?”
Hand (Her treasure) - Her family
Heel (Her weakness) - Losing her family
Heart (What does she want to accomplish)- To help cheer up the world
Back (Her background) - She was an orphan as her parents died when she was a newborn (this is why she doesn’t want to lose her family)then she got adopted when she was 5 and stayed there until she could move out to college.

Name - Nicola Charles

And here is a picture to go with it -

My Awesome Portrait

Hey Bloggers,
Welcome to my second blog post.
As it is the start of the year, teachers challenge us to do lots of artwork, which means we have a lot to complete. This piece of artwork is my portrait. Our portraits were inspired by the artist Romero Britto, whose art is full of colour. We made our portraits represent us.

I am not a good artist, but I tried. Here is My Awesome Portrait

As you can see I have a dog, his name is Cooper. Also, I am an only child.
Can you find anything you Bloggers enjoy as well? Can you tell what 2 other things I like?

Waste of Money

Hey Bloggers, Zara here
Welcome back to my blog for this year. I really enjoyed my holidays. Did you?
This term our writing focus is Waste. This is my writing on Waste of Money

Do you ever wonder what you are spending your money on and if it is really worth it? This text is about Waste. But more importantly Waste Of Money.

Do you ever buy branded clothing because it is "Trending" Well what happens when suddenly the trend changes, what do you do? You would most likely go out and buy the new "Trending" outfit. So what happens to the new outfit you just bought? More Importantly the money.

The money you just spent was for no reason. So how can you stop wasting money? Well, you could, Sleep on it (think about what you want to spend money on overnight), This can help by letting the cost of things sink in and might help you change your mind.

Stop spending so much on food, plan what you are going to need for a week and how much you will need to spend. Another option is that you put a limit on how much money is on your credit card, that should make you spend more wisely.

In conclusion, I believe that money should be spent wisely and not be wasted on things "just because".
